Save

New Zealand's safe cities, stunning landscapes and growing industries make it a very attractive place to find a job. Looking for work in New Zealand is difficult on account of rising demand but following a few steps streamlines the process.

  • Find out your current status in terms of New Zealand's immigration and work visa policies. If you are currently outside of the country and are not a citizen then you can either come to the country and establish residency or you can apply for a work visa under the Skilled Migrant Category, provided you have a valuable job skill. Alternatively, you can apply for the Work To Residence Category, which allows you to enter the country as a worker and move towards residence from there.

  • Get a snapshot of the kinds of jobs available in New Zealand by doing some research on the country's developing industries. Look to specifics in the agriculture, hi-tech and fishing industries that are all among the strongest of the country's sectors. Also, look to developing industries like eco-industry and, surprisingly, New Zealand's growing fashion market to see if there are job positions suitable for you.

  • Search New Zealand-based job sites such as Seek.co.nz, which is the largest and most comprehensive of New Zealand's online job networks. You should also stay up to date on New Zealand's business magazines such as Unlimited Magazine and get plugged into popular local social networks like Old Friends and Bebo.

  • Head to New Zealand for an extended stay so you can meet business people, interview and do some local networking. Start off in Auckland, which is New Zealand's largest city, but also look around at some of the more robust smaller cities such as Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton, where industry is spread out in various fields and disciplines.
