How to Get Along With a Boyfriend's Sister

It's typical to have issues with your boyfriend's parents, but when it comes to his sister, you may not expect to have any problems getting along with her. Sometimes sisters are protective of their brothers and aren't quick to accept the new girl who has come into the family. The following steps will help you to get along with and hopefully become friends with your boyfriend's sister.

  • Treat her with kindness. It sounds simple, but if she gets on your nerves sometimes or isn't such a nice person herself, it may be harder than you think. Still, you must be nice to your boyfriend's sister to even begin to form a relationship with her.

  • Get to know her better by chatting with her about her life, interests and relationships. Tell her about yourself as well so that she can get to know you as more than just her brother's girlfriend.

  • Encourage her and be a good friend to her. If you go over to the house one day and she's upset about something, ask her if she'd like to talk about it with you.

  • Accept your differences. Your boyfriend's sister may say and do things that you would never think of doing. Instead of judging her, learn to appreciate your differences.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bite your tongue if you were going to say something even remotely impolite or rude to her. It's best to keep these things to yourself. You can vent to your friends later.
