How to Find Hidden Goodies With Google

Google is a great tool for finding one specific piece of information you need. However, you can also use it to find hidden things you never even knew you wanted to see. With a few tricks you can use Google to explore the Internet in new ways and find goodies off the path of the major websites.

      Find controllable webcams with Google. One trick you can do is use Google to locate Panasonic's controllable networked webcams, which all have "ViewerFrame?Mode=" in their URLs. In the Google search field, type in "inurl:ViewerFrame?Mode=" to find hundreds of controllable Panasonic webcams. Click on a link and control the webcam.

      Look for some more controllable webcams. Another popular webcam, the Axis 2400, also has similar URLs for all of its controllable webcams. To see Axis 2400 webcams, put "inurl:indexFrame.shtml" into the Google search field.

      Search Google for first pictures. All Sony digital cameras have the same file name for the first picture taken with them. To use this trick to see hundreds of people's first photography attempt with their new camera, search Google for "DSC00001.jpg." Click on the Images tab to get right to the pictures.

      Use Google to find more first picture attempts. To look for first pictures taken with a Canon digital camera, put "IMG_0001.jpg" into the search field. Then, put in "DCP_0001.jpg" to see first pictures taken with a Kodak digital camera.

      Get a super close-up view of Google Maps. From the Google Maps website, put in an address and then click on the "Satellite" tab to get a satellite view of the map and then click on the "Link to this page" link In the top right-hand corner. Copy the URL, but change the last number in the URL from 16 to a bigger number such as 20 or 21. Paste the URL into your browser for a super close up view.

      Take a virtual tour of a city with Google Maps. After you put an address into Google Maps, click on the "Street View" link in the box which comes up. This gives you a virtual view of the map from street level.

  • The up close view of Google Maps may not work in all areas. If it does not work, try a less remote area.
