How to Regain a Registered IRC Nickname With Nickserv

Nickserv is the nickname ownership service provided by most modern Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks. After you register your nickname, you can set up Nickserv to defend your nickname with varying degrees of intensity. In some cases, you may need to have Nickserv forcibly remove a user who is trying to use your nickname from the IRC network.

    Instructions

Log on to the IRC network using a different nickname. Use the IRC /whois command to determine if the user holding your nickname is an old software process that the network simply doesn't realize is no longer actually connected, or a different individual trying to use your nickname.

      • 2

Use the Nickserv Ghost command to remove an old version of you that the network thinks is still connected. Go through the IRC server using the standard /msg command with the syntax, /msg Nickserv GHOST nickname password.

      • 3

Replace "nickname" with the nickname you wish to regain, and "password" with the appropriate password for that nickname. Verify that the "ghost" user has disappeared, then change to the nickname you have just recovered.

      • 5

Wait one minute and change to the nickname you have just recovered. if you do not wish to wait, /msg Nickserv RELEASE nickname password, where "nickname" is the nickname you wish to regain, and "password" is the appropriate password for that nickname to have Nickserv give up the nickname immediately.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Syntax for communicating with Nickserv may vary. The syntax above is for the IRC Services version of Nickserv written primarily by Andrew Church. On most networks, you can send a message to Nickserv with just the word "help" to receive a list of Nickserv commands.

    • Nickserv will remove the other user from the network and generate a fake user with the same nickname, preventing the other user from immediately returning.
