Instructions

    • 1

Combine the sugar, flour, salt and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into the mixture until you get a crumbly consistency.

    • 2

Add an egg and milk or cream to the mixture. Stir until the dough for your scones pulls away from the edges of the bowl.

    • 3

Drop the dough onto a floured surface. Knead your dough no more than ten times to prevent chewy scones.

    • 4

Roll out your dough until it's a 1/2-inch thick circle. Cut the dough into wedges or use cookie cutters to make shaped scones.

    • 5

Place the dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet. You can place the scones close to one another since they don't spread out much during baking.

    • 6

Bake your scones at 400 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove your scones when they're lightly browned.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't touch the cut edges of the dough. You limit the rising height of your scones by handling them.

  • Knead your dough as little as possible to get the ingredients thoroughly mixed. Too much handling of the dough results in gooey scones.

  • Remove your scones from the oven immediately after baking to a golden brown. Place the scones onto a cooling rack as soon as you take them out to keep your scones moist.

  • You can add berries, raisins or chocolate chips to your scones recipe. Put them into the dough before you add the egg and milk or cream.
