Damaged grout will eventually lead to water damage and expensive repairs. Use these preventive measures to keep your tub and shower area looking like new.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Silicone sealer for grout
  • Caulking

Keep the Grout Clean and Dry

  1. Step 1

Dry the tub, shower, tile and grout with an old towel or rag each time you shower or bathe. This simple measure will stop moisture from producing mold and mildew, and will help prevent the buildup of lime and soap scum.

  2. Step 2

Repair dripping faucets to maintain tub and shower tile grout. Dripping water contributes to stains, mold, mildew and the softening and cracking of the grout.

  3. Step 3

Remove simple stains with a paste of baking soda and water. Use a small stiff bristle brush and work in a circular pattern on the grout.

  4. Step 4

Spray or wipe the tiles and grout with a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Dry the cleaned surface with a towel.

  5. Step 5

Use a household cleaner according to directions for stubborn stains. Read the warnings on the container and make sure the cleaner will not harm tile or grout.

  6. Step 6

Clean the grout with a pressurized steam cleaner to remove resistant stains.

  7. Step 7

Find a commercial grout cleaner when other cleaning efforts fail.

  8. Protect Tub and Shower Walls

  9. Step 1

Inspect your tile grout regularly and replace soft and cracked grout before water damage occurs.

  10. Step 2

Apply a tile grout silicone sealer to maintain tub and shower tile grout.

  11. Step 3

Replace old and peeling caulking around the tub and shower.
