Boston Cream Pie is actually a cake. This dessert starts with a sponge cake, adds a creamy custard filling and tops the whole thing off with a chocolate glaze. Boston Cream Pie was originally baked in New England in the early 1800s.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Semisweet chocolate
  • Heavy whipping cream

    Cake

  1. Step 1

Combine the eggs and sugar with an electric mixer until they're fluffy. Add the vanilla to this mixture and stir until it's well-blended.

  2. Step 2

Sift the flour into the eggs, sugar and vanilla. Add the butter to the cake batter.

  3. Step 3

Pour the Boston Cream Pie cake batter into a cake pan. Bake it in a 325-degree F oven until the cake is spongy when you touch it. Turn the finished cake out upside down onto a cooling rack.

  4. Cream Filling

  5. Step 1

Blend the sugar and the egg yolks. Combine the flour and the cornstarch and add this mixture to the sugar and eggs.

  6. Step 2

Boil the milk in a pan until the milk foams. Take the pan off the heat and combine the milk with the egg and sugar mixture. Place the mixture back into the pan and bring it to a boil.

  7. Step 3

Stir the cream filling for your Boston Cream Pie constantly and add the vanilla once you remove the pan from the heat. Place the cream filling into a bowl and cover it. Cool the filling in the refrigerator.

  8. Chocolate Glaze

  9. Step 1

Put the chocolate into a bowl that can withstand heat. Boil the heavy whipping cream in a pan and pour it over the chocolate just after it boils.

  10. Step 2

Allow the cream and chocolate to sit for a few minutes. Stir the combination until you make it smooth.

  11. Step 3

Let the chocolate glaze for your Boston Cream Pie stand. Leave it until it's thick enough to pour.

  12. Put It Together

  13. Step 1

Slice the cake in half sideways and remove the top section. Place the bottom half onto a plate with the cut side facing up.

  14. Step 2

Spread the cream filling evenly across the cake. Set the top section of the cake onto the bottom section, with the cut side on the cream filling.

  15. Step 3

Drizzle the chocolate glaze over the top of the Boston Cream Pie and spread it to the edges. Place the dessert into the refrigerator and allow the glaze to get firm.
