Once practiced by Buddhist Monks, Muay Thai is Thailand's native national martial arts. Thailand's military also trains in Lerdrit, an altered version of Muay Thai. Muay Thai incorporates use of every part of the body, hence its other name "The Science of Eight Limbs." A Muay Thai move involving the fists is the Hook Punch or Mud Wiang San that makes contact with your opponents' chin, ear or temple.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use focus mitts and/or a punching bag to practice and perfect the timing, speed, and power of your hook punch.

  2. Step 2

Stand, if your are right-handed, with your left leg forward and the right leg behind it. Do all these steps in the reverse if you are left handed. Slightly bend your knees.

  3. Step 3

Put your hands into loose fists. Position your left fist forward slightly out in front of you. Place your right fist at about the height of your chest and aligned with the side of your body, towards the rear of you but not behind you.

  4. Step 4

Bend your right and left elbows slightly. Bend them comfortably to a point where when you need to defend against a counter punch, you can then fully bend your elbows on the sides of your head to protect from counter punches. In this defensive move, your fists should be pointed behind you with your elbows pointing straight forward. Your upper and lower arms press against the side of your head.

  5. Step 5

Send your right fist forward towards the opponent's face in a half-circle or half-moon motion on a path to the outside of your body. Do not lock your elbow. Clench your fist right before it makes contact with your opponent.

  6. Step 6

Turn your shoulders into your opponent. This will produce power from your hips, feet, and shoulders. Impact your opponent's face with your lower knuckles (the ones that crown your palm).

  7. Step 7

Draw your fist back as soon as you land a punch so as not to leave yourself vulnerable to a counter punch.
