The rock step, also called the side break, in the rumba is used along with the box step to add variety. It requires a strong leader that can indicate when to do the rock step instead of continuing with the box step by keeping the right arm very stable and shifting the shoulders.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with the box step. Step forward on your left foot (count 1) and forward and to the right with your right foot (first half of count 2).

  2. Step 2

Change to the rock step by not moving your left foot beside your right foot. Instead, keep the left foot in place and shift your weight to your left foot (second half of count 2).

  3. Step 3

Move your right foot beside your left foot (count 1).

  4. Step 4

Step out to the left with your left foot (first half of count 2), rock to your right foot, and then rock to your left foot (second half of count 2).

  5. Step 5

Continue with the rock step, stepping to the side with the right foot and then the left foot, until you're ready to return to the box step.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember the Cuban motion. Bend your knees before you step and then straighten them as you place your weight on the stepping foot. For the rock step, don't bend your knees but simply transfer your weight to the rocking foot.
  • The rumba is danced to 2/4 time, with the first step taking one beat, and the next two steps both done on one beat. Whether doing the box step or rock step, count slow, quick-quick.
