Hurricanes devastate all that is in their path including your home and belongings. The high wind and torrential rain do not discriminate between people and animals. They blindly go on their way leaving wreckage and flooding in their wake. Get insurance against hurricanes so you can rebuild your home if this unfortunate disaster occurs in your neighborhood.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop for insurance against hurricanes. Call the companies listed under "home owners insurance" in your local yellow pages. Ask the representative if they offer hurricane insurance.

  2. Step 2

Get the rates offered by those insurance companies that offer hurricane insurance. Many companies no longer offer insurance against hurricanes because of the recent hurricane disasters in Florida and Louisiana.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the policy says it covers hurricanes. Some policies may cover wind damage or flooding but not both. Your policy must say it covers all three-- wind, flood and hurricane.

  4. Step 4

Discuss money saving options with your insurance specialist. You may be able to lower the premium you get with hurricane insurance by reducing other areas, such as choosing a higher deductible.

  5. Step 5

Ask about state funded insurance programs that offer hurricane insurance. Many states now have hurricane insurance policies in place for the residents who would otherwise be uninsurable. Request information from your state about hurricane insurance from the Insurance Information Institute at iii.org.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the Better Business Bureau at bbbonline.org for complaints about the insurance company you are considering. You want to make sure the company will pay off if a hurricane occurs.
