Start with a part-time job while still in high school. Many television and stereo installers hire helpers on weekends and in the evenings. You can learn the trade and bring a level of experience to your first full time position.
-
2
Go to work for yourself. Many installers of media systems and home security are independents. Advertise in the local paper, get some business cards and be prepared to take the referrals, which is the best way to grow your own business. When people start talking about your work, you can expect to get more calls.

Develop sales skills that you can transfer to the consumer electronic retail environment. Once you learn the ropes in a retail store, you can then move on to the corporate level in the industry and apply for sales and marketing jobs directly with manufacturers. Many people also make a good living by staying in retail and moving to sales and store manager positions.

Prepare to start at the bottom if you want to work in a consumer electronics manufacturing operation. The pay is not very good, since most of these jobs have gone overseas. But if you live near a plant, you should put in an application to work on the line. Management candidates are often recruited from the workers. Executive positions are available to candidates with MBAs.
