How to Create a DJ Name

A cool moniker is a must for any self-respecting disc jockey. DJs are entertainers, and while the music you play and how you present it is the deciding factor in your ultimate success, you have to land the gigs first. A good name is easily remembered; it's catchy and it leaves a memorable first impression. Take some time, and find a good name to kick off your thriving business.

  • Survey your friends with your ideas. Only ask those people who are completely honest with you. Groupies only feed you compliments and don't tell you if your name is lame. Run it by some really hard-core clubbers for the best feedback.

  • Consider a play on your own name. Alliterations such as Brat Boy Bob or Freaky Phil are easy to remember and keep it personal for you. While DJs may spin other entertainers' recorded music, they provide a party atmosphere with their personality and style. Make it personal by including a piece of your own given name in your working persona.

  • Take a piece of your favorite online game character or movie hero. For example, Iceman is a popular X-Men character who is easily recognized. Steal a piece of the name and make it your own disc jockey name, like DJ Iced or DJ Instant Iceman. Most disc jockeys do put the DJ somewhere in the name to help them stand out in a crowd of advertising entertainers.

  • Choose a name that reflects the kind of music that you play. A name such as DJ Hip Hop Harry tells your audience what to expect in very few words, while providing a memorable name they can talk about to their friends. If you want to develop a following, you need to say as much as you can in as few words as possible about what kind of disc jockey you are.
