Things You'll Need:
- Indoor rock climbing equipment
- Exercise equipment
- Weights
- Tape
-
Step 1
Practice indoor rock climbing at least 3 to 4 times a week. If you are serious about rock climbing, the best way to improve is to practice consistently. Focus on honing your skills in top rope climbing before moving on to another level.
-
Step 2
Find a buddy to go with you to the gym so you can encourage each other and keep each other on track. Consider taking a few private lessons together so you can both get some one-on-one instruction.
-
Step 3
Take a class on indoor lead climbing from a trained instructor once you lose that beginner feeling and master top-roping. Most gyms offer beginner, intermediate and advanced classes for those who want to learn more about the basic safety rules, knots, clipping and other important aspects. Many gyms want you to take a lead climbing class before you attempt to lead climb to ensure you know what you’re doing, as it is more dangerous than top-rope climbing.
-
Step 4
Tape your finger joints, elbows and wrists for added support when climbing.
-
Step 5
Exercise regularly and eat a well-balanced diet. While rock climbing is an excellent workout, be sure to vary your routine by adding some different types of cardio workouts and focus on strength training with weights to increase your endurance, stamina and power.
