How to Get Rid of Foreign Grain Beetles

If you're having a problem with small camel-brown beetles in your house, you might be infested with foreign grain beetles. These bugs eat fungi and mold. If you have a lot of moisture in your walls due to wet wallboard or lumber, you are at an increased risk to be infested with foreign grain beetles. Here's what you can do to get rid of these pests.

  • Repair any problems that might be causing the growth of mold or fungus in your walls. Have any leaky pipes repaired. Make sure your home is well ventilated. Address anything that can cause a buildup of moisture.

  • Spray an aerosol containing pyrethrins or spread a dry residual dust around baseboards and in any spaces between electrical outlets and walls. This can help control foreign grain beetle infestation.

  • Allow time for the house to dry out and the mold and mildew to die. Typically, moisture problems can be seen in new houses and it can take up to four years for a house to dry out enough to kill mold. As foreign grain beetles are tough to get rid of, this option may be your best one.

  • Control visible foreign grain beetles by sucking them up with a vacuum cleaner. While this won't do anything to control the beetles inside the walls, at least you won't have them crawling all over the house.

  • Contact a professional exterminator who has experience in getting rid of foreign grain beetles. They will have the aerosol sprays and dust products needed to help control the problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save money and frustration and tolerate foreign grain beetles as they are only active for a short time during the year, typically during late summer months.
  • Foreign grain beetles do not bite or go after food or clothing. They also do not destroy the wood in your home the way termites do.
  • Don't expect to get rid of foreign grain beetles quickly or easily. They are tough bugs to get rid of, especially if their food source--mold and mildew--remains present in your house.
