Hoof crack is a very dangerous condition in horses that causes injury and infection. Properly treating hoof crack is the only way to insure your horse remains healthy and prosperous. If your horse has cracks in his hoofs, treat him immediately.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take the horse to the veterinarian as soon as you spot the hoof crack. Hoof crack is sometimes caused by Laminitis, a disease that causes the hoofs to break down. Veterinarians use various treatments for Laminitis to save the horse.

  2. Step 2

Pick out your horse's hooves each day to remove any stones or debris. Check his shoes and studs for signs of wear. Remove the shoes if the cracks centralize around the shoe.

  3. Step 3

Change your horse's diet. Different breeds require different kinds of diets. Ask your vet what diet is best for your horse. Add a biotin supplement to the horse's diet. Supplements are available at any store that carries horse supplies.

  4. Step 4

Keep temperature fluctuations to a minimum. Do not let the horse stay in a cold, damp area and then move directly into the hot sun. If possible, do not let the horse stand in muddy or wet areas.

  5. Step 5

Rub the hoof down 2 to 3 times a week with vitamin E oil or lotion. Do not sock the hoof until it heals.

  6. Step 6

Protect the horse's feet when in transport. Cover the hoof but leave the heel free.

  7. Step 7

Walk the horse on soft land. Avoid hard surfaces as much as possible.
