How to Make a Radio Broadcast

The radio made its debut more than a century ago and is basically unchanged from its earliest form. Sending one's voice or broadcasting an event is what we listen to in cars and in our homes. Making a radio broadcast is much easier today than it was in radio's early days. With a few pieces of equipment and some spare time, virtually anyone can make a radio broadcast.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a radio transmitter from an electronic supply store, such as Radio Shack. These small devices transmit a broadcast as far as the installed antennae allows. These are very crude radios, and their range is very limited.

    • 2

Look into setting up an Internet radio station. Many websites offer individuals a chance to operate their own online radio station and provide them with a toolbox of software and tips to get up and running quickly.

    • 3

Consider learning about and getting licensed to operate a HAM radio station. These small, high power units transmit broadcasts around the world, but require an FCC license to operate. A basic understanding of Morse code is a prerequisite.

    • 4

Put in a resume at a local college radio station. Many small stations are shorthanded and offer training to host a broadcast or help with the radio broadcast's production. These positions are often seasonal yet provide a venue for future broadcasting possibilities.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask around the local area to see if there are any local events that need a broadcasting host. Auctions, rodeos and public broadcasting are a few outlets to investigate.

  • Practice speaking clearly and concentrate on diction.

  • Obtain all permits and permissions before making a radio broadcast.
