How to Do a Back Dive With a Half Twist

A back dive with a half twist is a basic springboard diving skill that will help you develop the mechanics learn more difficult diving skills. The diver faces backward and bounces on the springboard to gain momentum, then twists to face forward during the dive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Stand on the edge of the springboard facing away from the pool. Balance on your toes with most of your feet hanging off the springboard to prepare for the dive.

  2. Step 2

    Bounce to gain momentum. Most divers bounce 3 times.

  3. Step 3

    Leave the springboard with your arms above your head.

  4. Step 4

    Turn your head, shoulder and hip in the direction you want to rotate, either to the right or the left. This creates the twisting motion in your dive. Rotate until you face forward.

  5. Step 5

    Straighten your head, shoulder and hips to prepare for a straight entrance into the water.

  6. Step 6

    Cleave the water with your hands and continue to move down until your full body is under water to minimize the splash.
