Drummers can’t always practice on their drum sets. They certainly are cumbersome and loud for one thing. Yet, like all good musicians, in order to stay sharp and continue to grow and become better musicians, they have to practice. A good set of drum pads is the key to getting in that necessary practice time. .Plus, drum pads are fairly simple to make.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Foam rubber
  • Felt with self-adhesive backing
  • Circle form to trace
  • Sharp cutting knife
  • Heavy cutting surface

Step1
Purchase the materials listed below at a local craft shop. You can save money if your purchase the foam in large sheets and cut them to the size drum pad that you need.

Step2
Lay the foam on top of the cutting surface. You can use a thick piece of cardboard, or wood. You could also do the cutting outside on cement if the weather permits. Just be sure that when you cut, you won’t ruin anything.
Step3
Find a circle the size of your practice pad. Use a plate or other dish that is the right size of your practice pad dimensions. Make one out of cardboard using a protractor to get it the exact size you prefer.
Step4
Set the circle on top of the foam and trace the edge. Cut around the circle either while the circle is still on the foam or remove the guide and cut out the foam following your line. Do the cutting on the hard surface rather than picking it up to cut it. The cut will be a lot smoother.
Step5
Remove the backing from the felt and place it on the foam. Press it into place and cut the excess felt from the edges.

Step6
Attach your new practice pad to a metal rim from an old drum set or one that you have made yourself. You can set the pad on a cymbal stand or carry it with you to practice anywhere, anytime.
