Step 1
Learn about the range of the Northern Leopard Frog. This particular frog is widespread across North America, and you can find it throughout North America except along the west coast.
-
Step 2
Spot a Northern Leopard Frog in its preferred habitats, including marshes, forests, mountains and meadows. They prefer aquatic vegetation and slow-moving water, especially during breeding season. When it isn't breeding season, you can find Northern Leopard Frogs far from sources of water such as in grassy fields.
-
Step 3
Estimate the Northern Leopard Frog's size. This frog measures between 2 and 3.5 inches in length. Female Northern Leopard Frogs are larger than their male counterparts.
-
Step 4
Observe the appearance of the Northern Leopard Frog. The upperparts of this frog have a brownish or greenish base color, with green or brown spots on them. These large spots are round in shape and have light colored borders. You can see these spots on the frog's sides, legs and back. The underparts of the Northern Leopard Frog are white, or greenish-white, in color. Look for the two ridges along the frog's back or the light colored stripe going through the frog's upper lip.
-
Step 5
Listen to the call of the Northern Leopard Frog. It's a rattling sound that resembles a snore followed by chuckling sounds.
-
Step 6
Watch some of the Northern Leopard Frog's behaviors. The Northern Leopard Frog is primarily nocturnal, especially during the breeding season. However, in the off-season, you may see them foraging during the daytime hours. Also, look for the Northern Leopard Frog jumping in a zigzag pattern.
