How to Finger Crochet a Hammock
There aren't many things more relaxing than a comfortable hammock swaying between two shade trees. Hammocks can be a little pricey, but you can make your own with a few supplies, a couple of pounds of scrap fabric and a simple finger crocheting technique.
Things You'll Need
- 2 lbs. fabric scraps
- Two 4-foot long 2-by-4s
- Old toothbrush
- Sewing machine

1
Rip the assorted scraps of fabric into inch-wide strips. Sew them together to make one long length of fabric and roll it into a ball.
-
2
Tie the end of the fabric strip around your finger to form the first loop. Wrap the ball end of the fabric under and over your finger to form the second loop. Bring the first loop over the newly formed second loop and drop it off your finger, leaving only the second loop on your finger. Repeat this step until the chain is 8 feet long. Make 14 chains.

3
Place the two boards on the ground with a 7-foot span between them. Space the 14 chains about 3 inches apart and tie them to the boards at both ends.

4
Start making a weave by tying the end of the fabric ball to the first 8-foot chain that you tied onto the board. Loop the fabric under and over your finger and crochet until you reach the next chain, then run the loop on your finger through the second stitch of the chain. Use the toothbrush to help poke the loop through. Place your finger back in the loop and continue to finger crochet until you get to the next chain. Repeat the same procedure all the way across to join all of the 8-foot chains.

5
Finish off the row by forming a loop and then cutting the fabric and leaving 4 inches. Pull the fabric through the loop and make a double knot to secure it.
-
6
Continue finger crocheting across the 8-foot chains every 4 inches until you've worked across the full length of the hammock. Use rope to secure your hammock to two strong trees.

Tips & Warnings
You can use old sheets, quilts or clothing to make your fabric strips as long as the fabric isn't too fragile.
