Postpartum vaginal dryness is common. Hormonal changes because of the birth of the baby are one of the main reasons for the vaginal dryness. Vaginal dryness can make sexual intercourse with your partner uncomfortable for you and him. There are some ways to overcome postpartum vaginal dryness.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be patient. Postpartum vaginal dryness will usually correct itself over time. Once your hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, the vaginal dryness will usually subside. Vaginal dryness may last longer if you are breastfeeding your baby.

  2. Step 2

Stay hydrated. Your body suffers from dehydration during birth because of the fluid loss. Vaginal dryness can become worse during this time because when your body is dehydrated, it sends all available fluids to your vital organs.

  3. Step 3

Indulge in some extra foreplay. Your body will naturally lubricate your vagina for intercourse. During the postpartum period, it may take longer for your body to produce the necessary lubrication.

  4. Step 4

Use personal lubricants. Make sure that the lubricants are water based. These are better for your body. When you apply these lubricants, follow the manufacturer's directions. Make sure that you wash any remaining lubricant off after intercourse.

  5. Step 5

Talk to your doctor if you continue to have vaginal dryness after the postpartum period. Medication may be necessary to help alleviate the dryness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never use petroleum jelly or lotions to lubricate your vagina. These products can harm you, possibly causing an infection.
  • Don't try to have intercourse without proper lubrication. This will be painful and can cause injury.
