How to Do Algebra
Algebra is defined as "a branch of mathematics concerning the study of structure, relation and quantity." For many students, algebra is the foreign language of math, rife with equations. The use of letters instead of numbers that demand to be assigned a value appears to add to the complexity. However, algebra can be broken down into a series of linked concepts.

1
Cultivate a "can do" attitude before class starts. Remember that practice makes perfect, so do the homework and practice algebra everyday. Review basic math skills to prepare for algebra.
-
2
Start learning the special terms used in algebra. Understand number sets, elements and learn to identify the numbers that belong to the set of whole numbers, real numbers and natural numbers. Practice writing mathematical statements using the equality and inequality signs.
-
3
Understand fractions thoroughly. Identify the numerator and denominator. Be able to reduce fraction, convert them and find the least common denominator. Know how to perform math functions (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction) with fractions. Understand prime numbers and prime factorization.
-
4
Study the properties of real numbers. Learn about positive and negative numbers, the value of zero and how to multiply and divide by zero. Practice math functions with real numbers. Know how to find the reciprocal of any number.
-
5
Practice reading graphs, including bar and line graphs and double line graphs. Understand the application of each. Know how to create and read a Venn diagram.
-
6
Master simple algebraic expressions and move to more complicated expressions and simplify them. Practice the properties of equality, including addition and multiplication. Advance to linear equations and linear inequalities.
-
7
Remember that each concept of algebra is built on another. Make sure to master each concept before moving to the next. Make the best use of class time and ask for help after class and in special tutoring sessions.
