Taking proper care of a water garden will result in a beautiful and tranquil place in your yard for you to enjoy. Water gardens often instill a sense of inner peace as you sit and gaze upon the beauty of the special features of your garden. Follow these simple care instructions periodically throughout the season to keep your water garden looking magnificent.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pruning scissors
  • Fertilizer tablets
  • Hose
  1. Step 1

Prune dead—or—dying leaves from your plants by removing the plant containers from the water.

  2. Step 2

Fertilize your water plants by placing fertilizer tablets into their containers following the directions from the manufacturer for your type of plant. Plant fertilizer tablets are available at fish and aquarium stores, outdoor pool and pond supply stores or online at websites such as Water Garden. (See Resources for link.)

  3. Step 3

Clean the bottom of the pool area frequently and remove any dead leaves, twigs or other material that has fallen to the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Spray your water garden plants gently with a hose to remove any aphids. The aphids will fall into the water and are tasty treats for any fish in your water garden.

  5. Step 5

Keep the filter clean by following the cleaning guidelines and instructions from the manufacturer of the filter.

  6. Step 6

Maintain the proper water level in your water garden, adding water as needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most hardy water plants are fine throughout the cold weather season.
  • In winter in very cold areas, sink the plants to the bottom of the pond making sure the water is at least three-feet-deep to prevent the plants from freezing.
  • Bring tropical plants inside during the winter season.
  • Winterize or remove your filter during the cold season following the manufacturer’s directions.
