How to Bypass the Water Heater of an RV

RVs are fun for the summer months, but soon winter comes and maintenance becomes necessary. The bypass of the water heater in an RV is an essential step in the winterizing process. When its times to drain the water heater or put anti freeze in the water pipes of a recreational vehicle, the steps used depend on whether the RV has a 1 or 3 valve system.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut any electrical power to the heater and its elements. There should be no electrical elements in an "on" position when performing the bypass as this will destroy those elements.

    • 2

Walk the outside perimeter around the RV looking for the water heater access panel.

    • 3

Locate the same spot on the inside of the RV and open access to the heater. Often, access is hidden inside a cupboard, so be sure to take a good look around.

    • 4

Look at the water lines connected to the heater and count the number of values that you see. If there is only 1 valve, go to step 4. If there are 3 valves, go to step 5.

    • 5

Find the valve and turn to a vertical position for a 1 valve system.

    • 6

Close top and bottom valves to "closed" in a 3 valve system. This typically makes the valve top at a right angle to the water line.

    • 7

Complete 3 valve bypass by turning the middle valve to "open." This typically makes the valve top in line to the water line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the owner's manual for advice on location of access panels.
