Your dog is part of the family, and you're naturally concerned for his well-being. When man's best friend wanders off, it can be nerve-wracking to try to find him. Luckily, the pound or Humane Society is a safe place to temporarily house lost animals. Here's how to retrieve your lost dog from the pound.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Call the pound to alert staff that your dog is missing. Give them as accurate a description of the dog as possible. It helps to have a picture handy. Identify the date and time that your dog became lost if you can pinpoint that information. Also give the staff your dog's license information and tell them whether he had a collar with tags.

  2. Step 2

Find out whether the pound has any dogs fitting your pet's description. Regardless of their answer, it's a good idea to pay a visit to the pound yourself. Your description of your missing pet and their description will often not match. Visit every day if you can, and ask to see dogs that might be housed in the infirmary or other areas.

  3. Step 3

Leave your phone number and a photo of your dog with the pound staff. Try to befriend the workers at the pound, and they might go to extra lengths to help reconnect you with your pet.

  4. Step 4

Check how long the pound will hold your dog before he is available for adoption or euthanization.

  5. Step 5

Be prepared to pay up when you locate your dog at the pound. Expect to pay a small fee to cover food costs or medical attention your dog received while at the pound.

Tips & Warnings
  • While you're checking at the pound for your lost dog, don't forget to post fliers around the community in a one-mile radius. Include a photo and a partial description of your dog and date missing (you'll want to leave out a few details of your dog's description to weed out bogus reward-collectors.) Make sure you don't put your name or address on the flier- just your phone number.
  • Don't give up looking for your dog. Some pets are found months later. Keep your hopes high that some kindhearted person is caring for your dog until he locates the owner.
