How to Draw People Using Boxes

Figure drawing is a difficult skill to master. An easy way to begin is to use boxes to represent each body part. Using geometric patterns to draw people simplifies the process and helps you create realistic-looking figures quickly and easily.

Instructions

1. Find a model to use as a reference for your drawing. You can either use a live model or a picture.

2. Visualize each body part as a simple shape. Draw the head first because it serves as a guideline for proportion, and proportion is the key to realistic drawing. You can measure all body parts in reference to head size. For example, most people are seven to eight heads tall and shoulders are usually two to three heads wide.

3. Use a pencil to lightly sketch the remaining body parts as boxes. Choose a box that corresponds with the shape of each body part. For example, use narrow rectangles to draw the legs and use a square to draw the torso.

4. Take note of facial proportions after completing the body outline. For instance, the bottom of the nose should line up with the bottom of the ears, and eyebrows usually line up with the tops of the ears. Eyes are halfway between the top of the head and the chin.

5. Trace over this geometric outline with curvier and more realistic lines. Add shading by darkening the shadowed areas. Pay attention to areas that are glossy and areas that are matte. For example, usually eyes appear glossy while skin appears matte. Hair is often a mixture of both. These finishing details lead to a realistic drawing.
