How to Start an Herb Farm

Herbs are used for medicine, for foods and for relaxation. Spices and herbs have become especially popular with green thumbs across the world, and many people want their very own herb farms and gardens. It is not hard to cultivate a herb farm, but it does take some planning and organization. Learn how you can start a herb farm and enjoy fresh herbs throughout the growing season.

  • Make sure you have enough money for this herb farm. Starting a herb farm will require money as you have to buy the land you will grow the herbs on. If you own the land, then you will have to buy all the herbs to plant.

  • Decide on the herbs you want to plant in your farm. Whether you are growing herbs for medicinal purposes or if you want to cook with herbs, you will have to organize what type of herbs you want.

  • Choose to create a polycultural situation for the best success. This type of farm is where you plant around six different herbs and allow them to grow over time. You will then have more herbs to choose from.

  • Buy all of the farming supplies you will need. If your farm is relatively small you can do most of your herb planting and growing by hand. If it is large, then you might need heavy duty farm equipment.

  • Make sure your farm is watered appropriately. Make sure that all of your herbs are pesticide free when you put them in sanitized jars. Try not to use any of these growing poisons as they will only ruin your herbs. Allow them to grow naturally.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can sell some of your bumper crop of herbs to local grocery stores, farmers markets or health food stores for extra money.
  • If you don't own any land, cultivate a smaller herb garden in small containers on your windowsill or patio.
