Get the education. There is no career path for an FBI profiler; instead a candidate gets into the FBI and works his way up. As an initial step, make yourself eligible for admission into the FBI by getting a college degree. Degrees in criminal justice, law, languages, and computer science are all highly sought.

Apply to the FBI. After college or graduate school, apply to the FBI. This is a rigorous process that requires applicants to pass certain tests, meet physical requirements and undergo a polygraph and background check.

    • 3

Gain experience. To become an FBI profiler, you need at least three years of experience as a special agent. Because of the high level of competition for profiler spots, even more experience is usually required; 10 years or more.

Hone your skills. An FBI profiler position is a highly sought job. Make yourself more attractive than other candidates by pursuing training in psychology or forensics, in addition to your law enforcement training.
