  • Desktop email software
  1. Step 1

Log in to your Gmail account on the Google Mail webpage. If you do not have a Gmail account, it is a free service. It takes 3 to 5 minutes to create a Gmail account.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Settings" tab at the top of the screen and choose what type of POP email you want. The settings either enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on or enable POP for all email.

  3. Step 3

Hit the "Configure Instructions" button on this page to receive information for your desktop email software.

  4. Step 4

Open the desktop email software and click on "Create New Account" or "Account Settings." This is located in different menus in different software. In Outlook and Eudora it is under "Tools and Accounts."

  5. Step 5

Name the POP email account and enter in the "Configure Information" given to you by Gmail. Remember to set up incoming and outgoing mail servers. Your password for Gmail online is the same password as your desktop email password.

  6. Step 6

Click "Test Email." This sends a test email to make sure the settings work. Click "OK" or "Apply" to save the settings.
