Amanda Beard is a seven-time Olympic medalist, competing in the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. At the tender age of 14, Beard earned a gold medal in the medley relay and the silver medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke. She also, in 2004, beat Summer Sanders' breaking Summer Sanders' 12-year-old American record in the 200m individual medley.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Work on technique. When Amanda was just starting, people believed that she would never make it to the professional level, as her technique was far from perfect. "I was horrible," Beard stays on her website, "my form was actually so bad, that it was illegal." Good technique will make you a stronger swimmer.

  2. Step 2

Practice. Although some may think swimmers just train in the pool, they actually do a lot more. Cardio exercise is also important to build lung capacity as well as strengthen muscles. Amanda usually involves in her work outs running, jumping rope, working with a medicine ball and crunches. In the pool, one of her favorite sets to do in her work out is 18 X 100 breast stroke set on fast times and intervals.

  3. Step 3

Stay focused by never giving up or thinking negatively. Amanda was asked in an interview what she thinks of when she is faced with a challenging work out. Her response was, "In the middle of my workout when I start to get real tired I try not to think about my body hurting or anything along those lines, thinking negative thoughts isn't going to make the workout easier or go by faster, I am very lucky to have some amazing coaches that keep workouts very laid back and fun."
