Shakes are a delicious way to sneak in extra vitamins, fiber and calcium. They also make for a tasty snack or breakfast. For a healthier version (a smoothie instead of a shake), replace the ice cream or frozen yogurt with ice. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 medium-ripe banana (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup rinsed, chopped strawberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup skim or low-fat milk
  • 1/2 cup vanilla frozen yogurt or ice cream
  • 1 tbsp. strawberry jam or syrup (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract (optional)
  • Blender
  • Tall glass
  • Straws

Instructions

      Pour the milk into the blender. Add the peeled banana, broken in half.

      Add chopped strawberries and ice cream or frozen yogurt. Add optional flavorings, if desired.

      Blend for one minute. If you have the option on your blender, whip for 20 seconds for a frothier shake.

      Pour the shake into a tall, clean glass. Or, divide into two medium glasses to share. Add straws and garnish with strawberries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of milk, you may substitute soy or almond milk (either plain or vanilla). Soy ice cream also works.
