Regular exercise is an essential part of managing your MS symptoms. However if you are living with one of the forms of MS that goes through exacerbations and relapses, regular exercise can be a challenge. The following guidelines can help you to return to your exercise program after experiencing a relapse

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be aware that it may take as long as six weeks for strength and stamina to return to former levels after as little as one week of inactivity. Don’t be discouraged. This is normal, even for people who do not have MS. Muscle mass can decrease noticeably after just one or two weeks of inactivity. When an exacerbation has interrupted an exercise routine, resume only after a doctor’s OK. And prepare to be patient.

  2. Step 2

If you have been exercising regularly there is a good chance that the body has built up a reserve of strength. This will make it easier to rebuild and it is even possible to exceed one’s former fitness level in time. When beginning to exercise again, set reasonable expectations. It is rarely possible to pick up an exercise program at the same point where it was when the exacerbation began. Try initially decreasing the intensity and/or the duration of an activity until you feel able to do more.

  3. Step 3

Sometimes it is not necessary to skip all activity altogether but rather to modify your routine. Talk to class instructors ahead of time so they can understand your situation and support you in returning to your program. Be open about limitations that your MS is posing and ask about ways the activity might be modified. Do not be afraid to request that corrections or modifications be given in private before or after class.

  4. Step 4

Remember your body knows best. If it does not feel right, don't do it!
