Things You'll Need:
- Bible
- Eagerness to study words
- Strong Spirit not to easily give up
- Prayer
-
Step 1
Old Testament of Bible has 39 books in total, and sometimes it is not easy to remember names of all books. It will be very convenient when searching the chapters and scriptures if we memorize names of all or most books in the Old Testament.
People normally remember the first 5 or 6 books which will start from Genesis up to Joshua. However, a lot of people may have some difficulties to find books after that.
The overall books in Old Testament are 5-12, 5, 5-12 ordering:
5 – Mosaic Cannon,
12 – History,
5 – Poetry & Wisdom,
5 – Major Prophets,
12 - Minor Prophets.
Use this method. Memorize this string of letters for each section.
First, use the string - GEL(a)ND for Mosaic Cannon:
G: Genesis;
E: Exodus;
L: Leviticus;
N: Numbers;
D: Deuteronomy. -
Step 2
Next, remember the string - JJR SS KK CC ENE for History:
J: Joshua;
J: Judges;
R: Ruth;
1 S: 1 Samuel;
2 S: 2 Samuel;
1 K: 1 King;
2 K: 2 King;
1 C: 1 Chronicles;
2 C: 2 Chronicles;
E: Ezra;
N: Nehemiah;
E: Esther. -
Step 3
Next string will be JPPES for Poetry and Wisdom:
J: Job;
P: Psalms;
P: Proverbs;
E: Ecclesiastes;
S: Song of Songs. -
Step 4
After this, you want to memorize the string – IJLED for Major Prophets:
I: Isaiah;
J: Jeremiah;
L: Lamentations;
E: Ezekiel;
D: Daniel. -
Step 5
Lastly, there will be a string – H JAOJM NHZH ZM for Minor Prophets:
(The string may sound like… H JaoJiM, NeHeh, ZeHeh, ZiM.)
H: Hosea;
J: Joel;
A: Amos;
O: Obadiah;
J: Jonah;
M: Micah;
N: Nahum;
H: Habakkuk;
Z: Zephaniah;
H: Haggai;
Z: Zechariah;
M: Malachi. -
Step 6
It really sounds like H JaoJim, NeHeh, ZeHeh, ZiM. Please always remember the ordering: 5-12, 5, 5-12.
We now can memorize 39 books. As you may know, New Testament has 27 books which is 3*9 using all books in Old Testament. Please note the equation 3*9 = 27. Then, total books in Bible will be 66 which is addition of 39 and 27.
What an exiting feeling we have if we know we can remember and memorize names of whole books in Bible. This method will definitely help all believers and readers study God's words.

on 10/12/2008 Speaking of typos, I made one myself, the first "this" in my previous statement should be the word "the". Not that it matters much, but it just sounds weird, and was bugging me, once again thanks for your time.

on 10/12/2008 66 books total, not 63... which appears to be a typo
I appreciate this time you put into this, very kind of you. Here is something else I find very worthwhile remembering.
The Bible is a message system: 66 books penned by multiple authors under the direction of the Holy Spirit, over thousands of years, the Bible is an integrated whole which bears evidence of supernatural engineering in every detail!
The system you offer is helpful, thank you, I am also indebted to Dr. Chuck Missler for his marvelous insights, and the source of my comment above.
