How to Change Drive Letters in Windows XP

By default, most computers designate the hard drive that contains all of the computer's data as drive C. If this is too boring for you, just take a minute to change the drive to any other letter. It's easy!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Microsoft XP
  1. Step 1

    Make sure you're logged into Windows as the administrator. Click the Start button and open up the Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Double click the Administrative Tools icon, which will lead to a new display of icons. Double click the Computer Management icon. On the left side of the new window, click Disk Management.

  3. Step 3

    Locate the drive for which you would like to change the letter. Right click that drive and click Change Drive Letter and Paths.

  4. Step 4

    Click the Change button, then click Assign the Following Drive Letter. Click the letter you want to use from the provided list, then click OK. Click Yes to confirm the change, and you're all done.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you change the letter of your only hard drive, keep that change in mind when installing new programs. Most software is automatically set up to install onto drive C, so you will need to manually change the destination drive during the installation process.
