This is a very easy guide to follow, with step by step directions. I just filed my taxes online for the 1st time, and I want to share this information with you. I have always been intimidated by tax season, but now I will never again procrastinate...it's so easy! Best wishes to you for a great return!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your W2 forms (they are usually mailed to you)
  • If married, your spouse's social security # (even if you are filing separately)
  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

    Log onto Turbotax.com

  2. Step 2

Click on the "Basic - FREE" tax-filing selection on the left-hand side.

  3. Step 3

Start by creating a username and password (so you can continue filing later if you'd like)

  4. Step 4

Have your W2 forms ready and focus on boxes 1-20, which you will have to enter as you go along

  5. Step 5

The top of the screen will show you how much you are going to get back in your return. As you continue, you'll see the # increse/decrease depending on your situation.

  6. Step 6

At the end, you can choose to add another W2 form or file for State Taxes. I filed for State Taxes and was charged $29, but I only received $29 from the state anyways, so you can decide if you should or not. In my case, if I knew how little the money was, I wouldn't have filed for the state.

  7. Step 7

After entering your W2 information, you can continue filing things such as deducations, donations you've made, and anything else you feel is tax deductible (small business expenses, etc.)

  8. Step 8

Decide whether you want a direct deposit or a check sent to you

  9. Step 9

Wait for the government to approve your file (2 business days)(You will be contacted via email)

  10. Step 10

    Wait for your tax return!

Tips & Warnings
  • The online filing wizard will ask you for your State Pin #, in some cases. I did NOT need one. Your social security # should be enough to electronically sign for your taxes
  • Have your driver's license or state ID handy.
  • If you would like funds to be directly deposited to your personal account, have your routing # and checking account/savings account # handy.
  • Sometimes, a pop-up will appear and offer you additional help for $9.99. You REALLY DO NOT need this. Like I said, I am brand new to this and did it myself and received a better tax return than I did last year when a person did it for me. This is just a selling tactic to get you to pay. In most cases, you will not need more help.
