Things You'll Need:
- Internet Connection
- Adoption application
- Adoption fee
- Cat food and dishes
- Cat litter and box
- Cat toys
- Love
-
Step 1
Decide what age the cat you want to adopt should be. There are 4 classifications most animal shelters use: Baby, Young, Adult, and Senior. I needed a cat that would be able to catch mice so kittens and senior cats were out. I needed a young cat that still had energy.
-
Step 2
Decide what breed of cat you are looking for. Personally I didn't care too much, but I knew I didn't want a cat with long hair. Cats with long hair shed more frequently which means more vacuuming.
-
Step 3
Decide what temperament you are looking for in a cat. Do you want a shy cat or an outgoing cat. My girls and I wanted a playful cat so we looked for outgoing cats. If you are more interested in adopting a cat that may need a little love and support to come out of their shell, I would suggest a shy cat.
-
Step 4
Visit Petfinder.com. There are plenty of great cats to adopt and searching through the listing is easy. Almost every animal shelter uses this service including my local animal shelter. I read through the available cats and brought a list cats that had met my criteria to the animal shelter.
-
Step 5
Download any adoption forms and fill them out ahead of time. This gives you all the time you need when you get to the shelter to focus on spending time with each cat.
-
Step 6
Visit your local animal shelter and give them the list of cats you wish to see. Then look for a connection when playing with each cat. Choose the cat that best fits your family.
-
Step 7
Pay the adoption fee and wait for approval from the animal shelter. If the animal is already spade and has had their chip implanted, then you should have a cat in a matter of days.
-
Step 8
Finally, be sure to review all of the instructions that are sent home with you by the animal shelter staff.
