Preparing for your practice can be both rewarding for yourself and the team. It also, can be time comsuming, but the outcome will be well worth the time spent. As coaches we want our team to improve, practice preparing can accomplish this with the proper concepts being followed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing that I always try to look at is what do we need to improve upon. So make a list of the fundamentals that you feel that you need to improve. Next look at any game areas that you need too look at and improve. Thirdly look at what game plans you need to work on for your next game.

  2. Step 2

I always then rank which areas we need to work on from most important to the least important. This helps in preparing the practice from a larger practice plan based on the amount of time we want to spend. As coaches you want to work on the areas that will effedt your team the most. As a whole I try to alternate days from offense and defense. Now we know what we want to work on, we can select the drills for the fundamentals where we are weak.

  3. Step 3

Try to pick one to three drills in each of the catagories. Always emphasis the fundamentals of the game, and how they relate in the drill to the game. As the drills are being run, stress those fundamentals and watch for the breakdowns where they are not being used.

  4. Step 4

The other concept that I have found to be a good one is to alternate practices from being hard to and easier day. Once can do this also in the drill portion. This keeps the players interested and alert as the practice continues. Try to begin the start of a practice with something that you not enjoy teaching but the players enjoy doing.

  5. Step 5

The following is a simple format that may be helpful. Select drills that last 5-10 minutes. make sure that everyone is involved. Don't let them stand. Have lots of chatter, talk and have them talk. Make sure they are going hard, make it game oriented and speed. Keep the time no more than 2 hours. Have any discipline problems leave the gym. Hopefully these ideas will help you and your team to work harder and have a great practice.
