Dressing fashionably is a great way to improve your image, self-esteem and even popularity, but it takes time and money. You can follow current trends or create your own style to make a fashion statement. Here are some steps you can take to make the fashion commitment.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want to fit into an existing fashion trend, or if you want to follow current high fashion trends fit to your personality. Established fashion styles such as Goth, Punk, Prep and Jock are easy to follow, if any of them appeal to you.

  2. Step 2

Get fashion ideas from online sources and from fashion and fan magazines. Top teen magazines for fashion include Teen Vogue, ELLEgirl, COSMOgirl and Seventeen. Fan magazines J-14 and ‘M’ have style sections and photos of younger stars in street clothes, and also have websites. Try a Japanese fashion website like onatoko.com, or U.S. sites like pinkicestore.com or PacSun.com.

  3. Step 3

Cut out pictures of your favorite outfits, tops or accessories and keep them in a folder for inspiration. Print out pictures of fashions from on-line sources and put them in your folder.

  4. Step 4

Shop locally in "job-lot" stores that buy up latest first-quality overstock fashions from wholesalers and sell them at discount. These stores, such as TJ Maxx, Ross and Steinmart usually have a wider selection than department stores.

  5. Step 5

Try finding your style of clothes at specialty shops like surf shops, beachwear or sporting goods stores. Use your fashion sense to select outfit pieces from the larger discount retail stores or outlet mall stores, especially if you have a smaller budget.

Tips & Warnings
  • It’s usually a good idea to discuss your fashion plans with your parent(s) even if you don’t plan to follow their advice. Finding out what their reaction is going to be can help you plan a gradual fashion change-over, if needed to keep things cool.
