Word association is key. Drawing a picture or hearing specific sounds in a word can be very helpful in memorization. For example Potato in Russian sounds like 'car' 'toe' and 'fell' With those three words that are each familiar to you make up a picture in your mind of a car that's brown like a potato, in the shape of a toe, and has fallen off a cliff. Chances are you will remember the word for potato for along time.
