1. First off access the situation, there are some places where bribes can land you in worse trouble than they are worth. For example it is a bad idea to try to bribe a police officer especially in the usa, as that itself is a crime and if the officer wanted to ,they could then arrest you for attempting to bribe them. On the other hand in some country's it is routine to bribe to police and they expect it. determine if the reason you want to bribe someone is worth the risk.
2. If you decide to go threw with it determine what you should offer. if you are in a disagreement over carrying items where they may be prohibited, for example try and offer some of the items in dispute( As an example, the law says you can only carry 10 bottles of rum over the border and you have been stopped with 20, offer them 5 bottles and ask if it would be ok to cross with the rest.) Ff you have nothing of value try to get the official in a conversation ,a shared hobby or sport can often be a starting place in a conversation to get him to like you more.
3. If you need to bribe somone you know, for example a boss or supervisor to cover for you on a assignment, try to find out what they enjoy other than money. you will probably not have enough money to bribe them into doing anything ,seeing as that they are paid more than you but if you know what they enjoy, you can achieve the same results with much less money If they drink wine buy a bottle of there favorite. in the corporate world ,don't think of them as bribes but as gifts. That means that its a better idea to give the the item before hand and then they will think of it later when you ask for your favor. Getting a cake for a coworker whose birthday is forgotten by others is like gold.
4. As for bribing cash be careful, don't show them more cash than you want to part with. A good plan is to remove a twenty dollar bill or two from your wallet before and place them in your pocket. Offer them palm down between your fingers so the numbers on the bills show. that way they never see your wallet and it is discrete to others around. this method has been especially useful on bouncers at clubs that are higher class. on anther note if bribing officials with cash don't pull any out and instead ask if you can pay the fine NOW because you don't want it to get lost in the mail. Stress that you want the money to get to the right person. Its harder to accuse you of bribery this way because it looks like you just wanted to pay the fine.
