You have spent the entire summer working with your market lamb. You’ve monitored its feeding program. You’ve carefully worked on a fitness program for optimal muscle development. In a few days, at the lamb’s final weigh in, it will not only be the perfect weight but also perfectly finished. All that is left is to see how well it matches up with the other market lambs. When it comes to 4-H and FFA projects simply selecting and raising a quality market lamb is only part of the deal. You also have to prove that you are capable of showing the lamb at your county fair. When showing a lamb you quickly learn that it doesn’t matter if your lamb is a regular Adonis if you aren’t able to properly display your lamb to a judge. Read on to learn how to groom your lamb for the show ring.

Things You'll Need:

  • A market lamb
  • Water
  • Soap
  • Old clothes
  1. Step 1

You will never be able to properly show your lamb if you don’t spend some time at home handling your sheep. Set aside time each day to practice leading your market lamb.

  2. Step 2

Market lambs are raised for their meat, not their wool. A market lambs wool is closely shorn before it ever steps foot on the fairgrounds. A clever sheep shearer will know how to shear a market lamb in such a way to draw attention to the lamb’s strong points and hid the bad.

  3. Step 3

Never ever take a lamb with a stained coat into the show ring. Make sure you bathe your lamb the day of the show, give your lamb enough time to dry before the sheep show begins. Lambs with wet wool are not attractive.

  4. Step 4

Try to encourage your lamb to drink some water right before you go into the show ring. The flanks of a lamb who hasn’t drank sink often appear to be slightly shrunken. Lambs that have recently ingested water have fuller sides and look a little healthier.

  5. Step 5

Give yourself enough time to change into clean clothes. Take a few seconds to wipe the dust from your boots and make sure your hair is pulled back and tidy. If you look sloppy so will your lamb.
