Once you know her, you'll never forget her.
Once you know her, you'll never forget her.

She’s not a household name, you’ve never seen her on "American Idol" and, chances are, you’ve never heard her records. More is the pity because she is a writer of unmatched ability, a vocalist whose distinctive sound makes her instantly recognizable, once you know her voice and in a musical world filled with assembly line style “artists,” she truly is unique. And if you are, by some chance, aware of her work and want to spread the good news, there are a few specific pieces of work that will spotlight her genius. Here’s how to turn people on to Kim Richey.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Kim Richey CD
  • Access to iTunes
  1. Step 1

Her first album, "Kim Richey," features 13 great songs, but if you want to turn somebody on to her sound right away, play “That’s Exactly What I Mean,” a song that was covered, not nearly as effectively, by country singer Patty Loveless. The irony of the lyrics reveal a lady who has lived some life and the beauty of the voice brings the song to life in a way that, as the old cliché goes, “Really sells the song."

  2. Step 2

The album, "Bittersweet," is also filled with great songs, amazingly crafted and beautifully sung. Play “Why Cant I Say Goodnight?” for your new Richey fan and watch their face express that Kim has used her words and music to create the feeling the title of the album indicates, “Bittersweet.”

  3. Step 3

If you want to show the “commercial” side of Richey’s writing, there is no better example than “The Way It Never Was” from the album, “Glimmer.” It’s a catchy pop melody, a great vocal with great harmonies and the lyric perfectly nails down that situation that so many of us have experienced. The ex who wants to get back together, remembering only the good times and not the hard stuff the broke you up in the first place.

  4. Step 4

Speaking of “Glimmer,” one other “goodbye” song knocks it out of the park “Didn’t I” is a song that anyone who has loved and lost can relate to and you simply will not find a song, simply written, simply sung that conjures up layers and layers of the emotions we feel when somebody breaks our heart. This and all the other songs mentioned here will very likely send your friend to the music store, looking for the complete library of Kim Richey
