Iodine is an element that is vital to human life. It's particularly important in helping to maintain proper thyroid function and growth. Finding good, healthy sources of iodine can be somewhat of a challenge. Read the steps below to learn how to add more iodine to your diet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Dedication to changing your habits for the better
Step1
The easiest way to ensure that you receive enough iodine each day is to make sure that you're using an iodized salt to season your food. This is the most common kind but not all salts are iodized. It's a good idea to make sure because this is a really easy way to up your iodine intake.
Step2
Adding more seafood to your diet is another great way to increase your iodine consumption. Fish and shellfish are both excellent sources of iodine and adding a couple of servings to your diet each week will probably be more than adequate.
Step3
Along with seafood, there's another great source of iodine that comes from the ocean--seaweed. Although this is not a popular staple among western cultures, seaweed is actually a very healthy kind of food and is a great addition to your diet.
Step4
One other source of iodine that bears mentioning is lean meat and dairy products. Both of these have substantial quantities of iodine present in them but they are not quite as good a source as those listed previously.
Step5
Finally, if you still feel the need to increase your iodine intake even further, try adding a multi-vitamin to your diet. Most vitamin supplements contain a good quantity of iodine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless you've been told so by a doctor it is rare for an individual in modern society to suffer from an iodine deficiency. If you do think that you are, it is of the utmost importance that you seek medical assistance as soon as possible.
  • Do not increase your iodine consumption with supplements without first consulting a medical professional.
