How to Treat Colic

Coping with a crying baby is frustrating. It can also be exhausting. I had three colic babies with in four years. Please be assured, that this will not last forever. My children are healthy children.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • patients
  • milk intolerance test (allergy test)
  • Gripe Water (available at your local health food store)

Step1
First, be sure that your child does not have a milk intolerance. You can do this with or without an allergy test. If you would like to do this without a test, eliminate dairy completely from your diet for a full ten days. If you notice a difference, dairy is the cause of your baby's fussiness. If you are bottle feeding, switch to a non milk or soy based formula. 50% of babies who have a milk intolerance will also have an intolerance to soy.
Step2
Visit your local store and purchase Gripe Water. Sometimes a dropper full two times a day will help a baby release gas.
Step3
Hold and talk to your baby as much as possible during this trying time. Infant massage is also very helpful in aiding a baby's digestive system .

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask for help. A few hours away from your crying infant will help you cope.
  • Communicate with your doctor. Be sure that there is not an underlying medical problem. Ask about Acid Reflux/Silent Reflux. A small percentage of infants respond to medication and will outgrow this condition.
  • Remember, this too shall pass. Once your baby's nervous and digestive system mature(around 4-6 months), your baby will become less fussy.
  • Never shake a baby.
  • Be sure to consult your doctor before giving your infant herbal remedies.
