Biotin, which is also known as Vitamin B7 and as Vitamin H, is an essential body nutrient. It is necessary for proper insulin production, body cell maintenance, fat metabolism, and the production of both fatty acids and amino acids. Unlike with many other vitamins and minerals, people rarely suffer from biotin deficiencies. This is due to the fact that bacteria that are located in the bowel tend to produce a sufficient amount of this vitamin to sustain life. There are, however, certain things you can do to increase your biotin intake and to ensure that you're getting the most out of the biotin your body is naturally producing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
First of all, if you feel that you're suffering from a biotin deficiency, then make sure that you aren't consuming raw egg whites. The raw egg whites have proteins which bind to biotin, keeping it from functioning properly. On the other hand, cooked egg yolks are a very good source of dietary biotin.
Step2
Oatmeal is another extremely healthy source of biotin. By adding a bowl of oatmeal to your diet each day you'll help add iron, fiber, biotin and many other healthy substances.
Step3
The ubiquitous peanut is another wonderful biotin source. Eating peanuts and peanut butter, despite their high caloric content, has actually been shown to be a very healthy snacking option.
Step4
Likewise, adding bananas to one's diet is a great way of increasing biotin intake. Not only are bananas a good source of biotin, but they also provide potassium and other essential minerals and vitamins.
Step5
If all else fails, you can always add a multivitamin to your diet. Almost all brands of multivitamin contain good quantities of biotin, along with all of the other basic vitamins that are necessary for general good health. If you're worried that you aren't getting your nutritional requirements met through the food you're eating, try adding a vitamin supplement.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not assume that you have a biotin deficiency. They are extraordinarily rare. Instead, if you think you're suffering from one, then visit your physician for a consultation.
