Tween boys appreciate style and trends when it comes to decorating their bedroom. Here are some tips for making your son's bedroom a place he can call his own.

From Quick Guide: Boys' Rooms Tutorial
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask any tween boy what he wants most in his room, when it comes to furniture, and he will probably say a chair. Not just any chair, but a comfortable sinking chair that allows him to plop down and read a book or a magazine. Some tween boys might even opt for a futon that can be used as a couch and a bed.

  2. Step 2

Tween boys are often into basic wood styles for their beds, dressers, and mirrors. The wood can be light, such as pine, or medium tone, such as oak. Dark wood tones are not at the top of the list.

  3. Step 3

Common favorite colors for boys are blue and black. Some things just never change. Solid bedding colors and curtains go over well with this age group. Themes are definitely out, unless they are centered on sports or music heroes.

  4. Step 4

Of course, the best place to get advice on what a tween boy wants in his room is to ask your son. He will tell you all kinds of things that he wants to make his room "cool." For many of us, staying within a budget is vital, so explain that not every idea can be accepted or expected.

  5. Step 5

Other neat accessories that boys like are a CD player and storage rack, a computer desk and shelves. Consider using stencils for the walls that can be easily painted over. What is in today, will undoubtedly be out next year.

  6. Step 6

With all of the possibilities available to decorate a tween's room these days, don't let yourself get caught up in everything you see. Tell your son that you are going to stick to a plan, and go with it. Otherwise, your son will drive you crazy with ideas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plan out the room in advance. This will save you time and money.
  • Let your son make some decisions about his room.
