The struts on your car serve 2 purposes. They act as a shock absorber and provide structural support for your car's suspension. The strut mount is located at the top of the strut assembly and is the mounting point for the strut. You should replace the strut mounts any time you replace your strut assembly. In order to do so, you need to first know how to locate them.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if you want to locate the strut mounts by looking above your car's tires or if you want to see the tops of the strut mounts. Front wheel strut mounts are easier to access from underneath the hood while rear wheel strut mounts are easier to access by looking above the tires.

  2. Step 2

Find your front wheel strut mounts by pulling your hood release and raising the hood. Look to the left and right of the motor directly over the wheels and you will see the strut mounts. They are round and have several bolts holding them on.

  3. Step 3

Locate front or rear strut mounts by kneeling on the ground by your car's tires. Look at the center of the tire and then look upward about a foot to locate the strut mounts.

  4. Step 4

Pop the trunk of your car to locate your rear wheel strut mounts from the top. They will be on the left and right side of the trunk directly over the tires. Pull back the carpet covering the trunk area of the car to expose the tops of the strut mounts.

Tips & Warnings
  • You'll need to realign your suspension after changing your strut mounts.
  • Use extreme caution when removing strut mounts. The spring located in the strut is under hundreds of pounds of pressure. Removing the strut mount incorrectly can pop that spring and cause injury.
