Over 50 years old, the Frisbee still knows how to move and capture fans throughout the world with over 200 million sold. While you’ll always find people throwing this flying disc in parks and on beaches, it’s also evolved into several sports. Dedicated throwers know the long history of the Frisbee.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Look at the pie tin as the beginning. A baker named William Russel Frisbie sold pies throughout much of Connecticut in the first half of the 20th century. These reusable pie tins had the family name of “Frisbie” stamped in the bottom.
Step2
Sail a pie tin through the air. Yale college students started throwing Frisbie pie tins during the 1940s. Coincidently, on the other coast, a toy company named Wham-O started producing a plastic disc for playing catch. Eventually the two met and changed the name of the flying disc to Frisbee in 1958.
Step3
Join an organization dedicated to Frisbee. The International Frisbee Association started in 1967; today you have the Disc Golfing Association. The Michigan-based Frisbee Hall of Fame tells people all about Frisbee history.
Step4
Play a Frisbee sport like Ultimate, created in 1969, or other sports like Disc Golf. Many Frisbee sports now hold national and world championship games. By 2001, flying discs joined the World Games.
Step5
Turn your pooch into a Frisbee whiz, and you can enter an all-dog flying disc competition.
Step6
Take note of Frisbee trivia history. In addition to the throwing stats that come from record holders, impress others with your knowledge that one of the inventors of Ultimate went on to produce “The Matrix.” Another fascinating fact is that the original Wham-O toy was modeled after flying saucers, not pie tins.
