Whether you dye all of your hair or just get highlights, using a color safe conditioner will lock in your color, making it last longer. Color safe conditioners also add shine to newly colored hair. You can purchase a color safe conditioner from beauty supply stores, your hair stylist, online and at drug or grocery stores.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a color safe conditioner that is right for your hair type and color. Ask your stylist for recommendations. Even if you color your own hair, your stylist will be able to give you product recommendations that will help your color last longer.

  2. Step 2

Wash your hair first with a color safe shampoo. Squeeze the excess water out of your hair with your hands.

  3. Step 3

Squirt some color safe conditioner into your hand. A little conditioner goes a long way. Start with a small amount and then add more, if you need extra.

  4. Step 4

Work the conditioner in to your hair, making sure you cover it from your scalp to the ends of your hair.

  5. Step 5

Read the instructions on the bottle of conditioner to know how long to leave the conditioner in your hair. Usually, you will leave it on for 2 to 3 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the conditioner out of your hair with cool water after the suggested time. Style your hair as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use color safe styling products to further protect your hair color.
  • Deep condition your hair by leaving the conditioner on for 5 to 10 minutes while you shower. This will help replenish the moisture that coloring takes out of your hair and seal in shine.
  • Shop for color safe conditioners at online retailers, like Beauty Mart, if you can’t find what you need in a local store. (See link in Resources.)
  • Chlorine will strip your hair color. Make sure to thoroughly rinse your hair after swimming in chlorinated water.
  • Color treated hair is more susceptible to sun damage. Wear a hat if you will be in the sun for long periods to protect your color.
