The picking style of playing on the acoustic guitar uses a pick to strike the strings and is modified according to the genre of music being played. The acoustic guitar is picked with the right hand. The other method for picking is to use the fingernails on the right hand.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the pick between the thumb and the forefinger. The thumb should fit comfortably sideways on the reverse side with the tip of the pick forming a sort of fingernail.

  2. Step 2

Hold the pick firmly but also flexibly. Allow the pick to move about slightly between the fingers.

  3. Step 3

Strike the strings perpendicularly with the pick. The strings should not be struck at an angle.

  4. Step 4

Get a feel for picking the guitar strings by casually striking them with increasing speed and nimbleness.

  5. Step 5

Move the wrist back and forth while keeping the hand positioned perpendicular to the strings.

  6. Step 6

Finger the strings without a pick. The fingernails give the guitarist several “picks.” Classical guitarists use their nails to pick the strings, which gives them speed and flexibility.
